Waipu in Tartan 2016 – List of Events

Waipu in Tartan is a month long celebration of heritage in the small Northland town of Waipu.  Below is the list of events for July 2016.

Friday 1st July – International Tartan Day

The Waipu pipe band parade from 11am from the Police Station. Join Waipu Primary School and don your tartan and join in the parade. Prize for best dressed in tartan. Great historical skit. Wet weather plan meet at Waipu Primary School.

Friday 1st July – Waipu Rugby Club’s 140th Year Pre-Celebrations

Waipu Rugby Club is celebrating it’s 140th year. Join them for a mix and mingle at the Waipu Rugby Clubrooms for a fun start to a weekend full of celebrations. The night starts at 6.30pm. Phone Craig Duffus on 027 432 7941.

Saturday 2nd July 9am – Waipu Rugby Club Junior and Senior Team Games

From 9am all Waipu junior and senior rugby teams will be playing in the Caledonian Park for the Rugby Clubs 140 Year Celebration weekend. All welcome.

Saturday 2nd July 11am – The Vet Centre People and Pets Parade

Waipu’s Highland Pipe Band will again be leading the Pets and People parade starting at 11am outside Pizza Barn. Wear your tartan to win a prize. The parade will end with a Sausage Sizzle at The Vet Centre with a gold coin donation to the SPCA.

Saturday 2nd July 6pm – Waipu Rugby Club’s 140 Year Gala Celebration Dinner

Waipu Rugby Club’s 140 Year Gala Dinner is to be held at the Celtic Barn. Tickets are $70.00 per person and this includes dinner and entertainment. The night starts at 6.00pm. Contact Mary Abercrombie on 021 598467 or email smabercrombie@xtra.co.nz for more information.

Sunday 3rd July 2.00pm – Tartan 9 Hole Tournament

Ambrose fun tournament. Prizes for best dressed in tartan, golf carts available and the cafe will be open and best of all you do not need to be a golfer! So get your team together for a fun afternoon. Tickets are $40 for a team of four. Tee off at 2pm. Contact the golf shop on 09 432 0259 or email waipu@golf.co.nz for a social day out.

Sunday 3rd July 10.00am to 2.00pm – Waipu Natural Health Tartan Event

A Health and Wellbeing event held at Waipu Natural Health Clinic, 3 Cove Rd, from 10am to 2pm. Join us and try out the treatments and consultations and meet the therapists including a Clinical Nutritionist, Reflexologist, Massage Therapists and more.

Sunday 3rd July 10.15am – Kirkin ‘o’ the Tartan

The Presbyterian Church invites all tartan wearers (and others!) to join in this special service at 10.15am. All welcome!

Sunday 3rd July 6pm – The Great Waipu Milk Off

Come along for some fun at ‘YourVet’ on SH1 and test your skills to see if you have what it takes to be the ‘Fastest Milker in the Shire’. Old school style refreshments will be provided and kick off is at 6pm. Interested participants contact Mike on 09 432 0500.

Monday 4th July 7pm – Waipu Scottish Country Dancing

The Waipu Scottish Country Dancing Club celebrates with a ‘Tartan Night’ at the Coronation Hall. The night starts at 7.00pm and it is a chance to have a go at some fun dances to lively music which suits all ages and no partner required. Monday 4th July to Saturday 9th July – Waipu Pharmacy Tartan Special

Come in to Waipu Pharmacy and enjoy a hot toddy and shortbread. There is also 25% off all gifts and the Waipu Pharmacy team will be there to let you know about the great offers in store and advise you on products.

Tuesday 5th July 7pm – Waipu 150 Speech Finals

Join us in the Presbyterian Church Hall for a evening of speeches by primary school children. All children must have a Waipu connection. Contact Paul Ramsay on 09 432 0135 for more information.

Tuesday 5th July 5.30pm – 6.30pm – Waipu Business and Promotions Group Meeting

Join the Business and Promotions Group for their monthly meeting. All local business, groups, trusts, clubs are invited for our tartan meeting. There will be a business card draw, prizes for best dressed in tartan and the bar and restaurant will be open.  The meeting will be held at The Clansman and starts at 5.30pm till 6.30pm . Thursday 7th July 6pm – 7.30pm – McLeod’s Beer Tasting

Saturday 9th July 12noon – Northpine Waipu Cup

Saturday 9th July – Tartan Bridge Tournament

Join the Bream Bay Bridge Club at Waipu to help celebrate Tartan Month 2016. The Royle Epsom Bridge Club for the third year running will co-host the bridge tournament. It will be held in Coronation Hall, The Centre, Waipu.

Saturday 9th July 9am – 5pm – Haggis Tasting at Waipu Butchery

Pop in and try some Haggis at Waipu’s famous Butchery.

Sunday 10th July 9am – 1pm – Waipu Boutique Sunday Market

Great fresh local and NZ made arts and crafts plus a cafe with espresso coffee and gourmet food. With over 45 stalls there is a huge selection of quality items available making this one of the most popular markets around. Held at the Coronation Hall. Sunday 10th July 11am – 3pm – Shortbread Making Competition

Waipu Fire Station. Bring your entries between 11am to 12 noon and results will be announced at 3pm. Monday 11th to Thursday 14th 10am – 2pm – Art by the Sea

At the Surf Club from 10am to 12noon. 4 Creative workshops with a beach or ocean theme. Provided by Waipu Community Arts: Clay Modelling 4-8 years Monday 11th, 8-12 years Tuesday 12th. Outdoor Art (weather proof) 4-8 years Wednesday and 8-12 years Thursday. $20 includes materials and a snack. Limited spaces. Saturday 16th July 9am – 5pm – Haggis Tasting at Waipu Butchery

Pop in and try some Haggis at Waipu’s famous Butchery.

Saturday 16th July 4.30pm – Men in Kilts Rugby Challenge

Join the Men in Kilts against The Parliamentary rugby team at 4.30pm. Golden Oldies rugby, post match celebrations at Waipu Rugby Club so don your tartan. Contact Steve Jones on 027 235 2506.

Sunday 17th July 10am – 3pm – Northland Equestrian Petting Zoo

At the Northland Equestrian Centre stables, 2760 SH1, Ruakaka from 10am to 3pm for a animal petting zoo, bouncy castle, activities, pony rides, food and drinks and more. Family fun for all ages and free entry. Fund raiser for Whangarei SPCA. Contact Maryka for details on 021 0668 546.

Tuesday 19th July 10am – 2pm – Waipu in Tartan 2016 – Art and Cycle Big Village Treasure Hunt

Start outside the Coronation Hall anytime between 10am and 1.30pm (cut off 2pm) finish outside the Coronation Hall. Waipu Community Arts and the Cycle and Walkway combine to bring you a creative treasure hunt. Bikes, buggies, wheel chairs, scooters and legs all welcom. Wear a story book character hat. Spot prizes. Correct entries go into the draw for treasure. $4 per treasure hunt map or 3 maps for $10. Children under 10yrs must be accompanied by someone over 14yrs. Friday 22nd & Saturday 23rd July – Waipu Museum Art’n Tartan Wearable Arts Awards

Where tradition meets fantasy! At the Celtic Barn, Caledonian Park. Friday 22nd July ‘Opening Night Show’ starts from 8.00pm.  Saturday 23rd matinee starts at 2pm, award show starts at 8pm.  Contact Waipu Museum for tickets or Eventfinda.

Wednesday 29th July 6pm – Waipu Hotel Pool Competition

Be there at 6.00pm for a free BBQ. All contestants must wear tartan. Free entry, prizes, raffle and drinks special!

Saturday 30th July 12noon – Mid Winter Swim and Tartan Taniwha Competition

Come on down to Waipu SLSC ready for your midday swim. Don your tartan and brave the cold for a refreshing dip. Sausage sizzle and hot soup available to support a fundraiser for Waipu Cove Junior Surf.

Create a Tartan Taniwha

This can be made prior to the day and brought down for judging on the day by 12 noon or create one on the day on the beach using driftwood, shells and anyother items found on the beach or around the home, garden and farm. Recyle those old items into a creative materpiece! Judging will be at 1pm after the swim. Prizes for best child, adult and family or group. Contact Greg on 021 0702273 for registration.
