Waipu Highland Games – 1 January 2014
The Games begin at 9am and there are events throughout the day – from athletics for the family, to piping and dancing competitions. You can explore the Avenue of Clans, or grab a bit to eat. $15/person $35/family pay at the Gate
Tartan in the Park begins at 2pm sharp
There are lots of great things to do during the day, but one of my favourites is Tartan In The Park, organised by Clan MacLean Association as a fun competition open to men, women, boys and girls all ages to show off their fashion design skills or costumes they have that contain tartan material.
The Clan Maclean Association of New Zealand organise this with Noel Robinson as compere – a fun fashion event to give prominence to tartan in various uses in garments as a means of showing various uses of tartan. Every year since 2008 we have seen a great variety in contestants garments and this is always linked to them being able to describe a little of the tartan itself and where possible, clan origins.
Entries are invited and will invited and will be accepted up to 1.30 p.m. on New Year’s Day
There will be five different categories covering toddlers, boys, girls, men and women – just another wonderful excuse to pay attention to your wardrobe on the day!! Enter, and come and watch.
This is my other on my personal favourites – sitting under a tree and enjoying young and old compete – from those who can barely hold a fiddle to those who play like an angel.
