Do you have some time to help children in the community by assisting with reading in Bream Bay Schools?
In March this year the inaugural Pukapuka Party was held and over 500 children and families enjoyed a day focused on literacy activities. Another event is planned for March 2017.
Bream Bay: The Learning Community
Following on from the Pukapuka Party a group of community and educationists have continued to meet to discuss how we, as a community can support the educational achievement of our young people. This group is promoting the concept of “Bream Bay: The Learning Community”.
Our local schools are keen to start a reading programme where locals commit to reading with children on a regular basis.
We are looking for people who
- care about children
- enjoy reading
- are keen to make a difference to the children they support
How you can help
By volunteering some time on a weekly basis. It is incredible how much difference additional one to one support can make for children who find reading a struggle.
The schools will provide support and some tips on the latest techniques to help children and the Learning Community group will provide coordination and encouragement.
If you are able to help and would like to know more there is a meeting scheduled for 11am on Monday 8th August at Ruakaka school which you are invited to attend.
If you’d like to be involved but cannot attend the meeting or just want to know more please contact Linda on 0274 864 150 or Wendy on 432 8025.
