Century Batteries Beach and Boat Fishing Competition
Going strong for over a decade!
This popular fishing competition has been going for over 10 years and is held annually in February at Marsden Cove Marina. There is huge support from South Island fishermen with contestants traveling from Invercargill, Dunedin, Christchurch and the West Coast. The Beach and Boat fishing contest is the largest snapper fishing contest in the southern hemisphere.
Great for the Economy
The event generates huge revenue for the Northland economy and the value of prizes awarded over the years exceeds 2 million dollars. More than $45,000 have been donated to local schools and over $90,000 to Coastguard.
The fun isn’t just for adults, with children’s sections included. Junior prizes include ages 6 and under, 7-10 and 11-15.
Each year a snapper is caught, tagged and released a few days before the event. If you are lucky enough to hook the tagged snapper then you stand to win $100,000!
Entries are limited to 2000 so it pays to get in quick when they go on sale, usually before December for the Feb competition.
Each year people descend on the north end of Bream Bay, many returning time and again for the fishing, fun and overall great time. The returning competitors each year is a testament to the competition.
The next competition is due to be held on the 17th and 18th February 2017. Go to the Beach and Boat website to keep up to date with registration info.
